Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The Sun enters it at the March equinox, around March 21, and leaves around April 19, so Aries opens spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the astrological year along with it. It is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars, the planet tradition links with drive, courage and self-assertion. Its symbol is the ram, an animal that goes in head first.
Astrology credits Aries with a direct temperament: a love of beginnings, an appetite for challenge, plain speaking, and a temper that flares fast and cools just as fast. The classic pitfalls are impatience and leaving things half-finished once the first excitement fades. Its opposite sign, Libra, is a reminder of other people and of balance. None of this is a rule: astrology describes symbolic tendencies, and your Sun sign is only one part of a birth chart.
